Set up an Agent

An Agent is a canister you own that watches your canisters, keeps their history and alerts your team. One guided flow takes you from signing in to a running Monitor, in about ten minutes.

You’ll need an Internet Identity, and to create an Agent, an OISY wallet with ICP or cycles to pay for it. During the public preview, creating an Agent also needs an invitation code from support@iclens.io.

  1. Start the setup. Choose Set up an Agent on Home. Or, on any canister you run, choose Monitor this canister: the setup then adds that canister for you.

  2. Create or connect. Create a new Agent, or connect one your team already runs by entering its canister ID.

  3. Name it and choose where it runs. Give it a name your team will recognise. Keep the automatic subnet unless you need a specific one.

  4. Pay. Pay from OISY with ICP or cycles. The review shows the price, the starting balance and the total before you approve.

  5. Add your canisters. Pick the canisters to watch, and choose how much the Agent may do with each:

Read health, cycles and memory, so Monitor and alerts work. It cannot change anything.
Also snapshots, settings and spending, run through the Agent. The Agent becomes a controller.
Observe is enough to watch a canister. Control lets the Agent act on it too.
  6. Start Monitor, or skip it for now. The Agent starts reading every canister every five minutes. Within a few minutes their health, cycles and memory appear. A skipped Monitor starts later from Monitor › Overview.

Open Agent › People, add a teammate’s principal and choose a role: Read-only, Read-write or Admin. Ask them for the principal shown in their own icLens account, since a wallet principal is different. More on roles.

  • New Agents start with Monitor paused until you start it in the last step.
  • The Agent pays for its own work from its cycles. Keep an eye on its balance on Agent › Overview.
  • If you close the tab during setup, open Set up an Agent again: it picks up where you left off and never charges you twice.
