OpenTelemetry metrics
Services that run outside the Internet Computer, such as an API server or a
worker, can send their OpenTelemetry metrics to your Agent. A small program,
the metra-forwarder, runs beside a standard OpenTelemetry Collector and
delivers its metrics to the Agent.
-
Run the forwarder beside your Collector, and point the Collector’s OTLP/HTTP exporter at it.
-
Add the forwarder as a sender. In your Agent, open Telemetry › Data connections › Metrics › Senders, choose Add a sender, and enter the forwarder’s principal. The review grants it permission to write metrics only.
-
Configure the forwarder with your Agent’s canister ID and the generation the review shows.
-
Check. The forwarder reads Receiving once its first metrics arrive. Find them in Explore metrics.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- The forwarder sends metrics only, never logs or traces.
- It keeps a small local queue, so a short outage loses nothing.
- Removing the sender stops it writing at once.
- Its full configuration is in the forwarder’s own guide in the Metra source.
