Take your first snapshot

A snapshot saves a canister’s code and memory so you can go back to it later. It’s the safest first change to make, and every other change in icLens works the same way: you review it, choose who runs it, and confirm.

Use a test canister

You need to control the canister. Start with a test one: a snapshot uses some storage, paid from the canister’s cycles.

1. Open the canister and go to Snapshots.

2. Choose Take snapshot. A review opens. Nothing happens until you confirm.

3. Choose who runs it.

   Acme ProductionThe Agent controls this canister and you are an Admin.

   YouYou control this canister.

   Run as: you, or an Agent that controls the canister.

4. Confirm. The review shows the result and the new snapshot’s ID.

5. Check it’s there. The snapshot appears in the list with its time and size.

If the reply is lost

If your connection drops while the snapshot is being taken, it may still have been taken. icLens checks the list before it lets you try again, so you never end up with two by accident.

Restore or delete it later

From a snapshot’s menu, Restore puts the canister back to that point. Delete removes the recovery point. Both open their own review and ask you to type the canister’s name. More on snapshots.
